Show ReviewSpectacular magic
By Caroline Fontein Nothing’s impossible. Just ask world-renowned magician Steve Wyrick, who manages to pull off some of the largest and most unfathomable illusions on the Las Vegas Strip. His show Real Magic takes place in his $34 million complex inside the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood. The show opens with an explosion of sound, dancing and lighting effects before Wyrick appears on stage along with a full size AS350 helicopter. He explains that he hopes to show everyone real magic as if they were 6 years old again where everything is filled with wonderment, curiosity and surprise - feelings you are sure to experience during the show. Wyrick, who has continued to amaze audiences since his Las Vegas debut in 1997, extends his role as a magician to all-around entertainer as the show encompasses everything from Broadway-style dance numbers to comedy and storytelling. Unlike other magic shows, Wyrick's illusions are purposed by his real life experiences. He mentions spending time in an airplane hangar with his father before he effortlessly walks through the spinning turbine of a 747. Sparks fly and Wyrick reappears unscathed. Sexy dancers, dazzling costumes and an eclectic soundtrack with everything from John Mayer to Rob Zombie are woven throughout the show. His illusions are all flavored with his down-to-earth personality and comedic way of interacting with the audience. Instead of the classic tuxedo, he performs in designer jeans, a stylish shirt and black boots. Wyrick’s high fashion sense and black faux-hawk offer a more contemporary and hip view of magic that appeals to audience members young and old. There are various times in the show when Wyrick relies on audience participation. This could be viewed as risky with the unpredictability of what someone might say or do. However, Wyrick appears prepared for anything with his constant comedic comebacks to every imaginable audience response. Explosive production elements and Wyrick's mind-boggling illusions keep the audience at the edge of their seats for the entire 90-minute show. There's no telling what he will do next. One minute he's standing on stage and the next he reappears in the audience. From sawing a woman into pieces to making a 12-ton Lear Jet 35 suddenly appear on stage, it's all in a day's work for Wyrick. |
