Show Review

So many voices, so little time

By Caroline Fontein

After more than 1,600 shows on the Las Vegas Strip, Larry G. Jones isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. In his high-energy show, Jones delights audiences with a non-stop string of more than 70 impressions that include singing, dancing and physical comedy.

Jones, the man of 1,001 voices and counting, starts the show with The Four Seasons' hit “Oh What a Night.” Next he explains that he is going to take you on a journey through time with him as the voice for the numerous legendary entertainers that you will encounter along the way. His vast repertoire encompasses six decades of music, including everything from the The Drifters to Michael Jackson and more.

He seamlessly transforms from Sha Na Na’s “Blue Moon” to Chubby Checker’s “The Twist” and The Big Bopper’s “Chantilly Lace,” all the while emulating each entertainer with precision. His enthusiastic performances and engaging stage presence gets everyone in the audience to sing along as he performs the familiar hits.

Some of his songs are dead-on impressions while others he turns into hilarious parodies. For Bob Dylan, he transforms into a living caricature of the famous singer/songwriter and performs a silly ditty about Britney Spears to the tune of “Like a Rolling Stone.” People in the audience chuckle as Jones sings and jokes about some of Spears’ recent not-so-glamorous moments in the media.

After wowing the audience with his four octave range, Jones takes a break from singing to do impressions of famous personalities including former president Bill Clinton, Bill Engvall and President George W. Bush among others.

For Jones’ segment on Bush, he explains that he is using actual quotes that have been said by the president. The audience laughs as Jones squints his eyes and stutters over his words, emulating all of Bush’s quirky mannerisms.

Jones started performing when he was in elementary school and continued through college where he became the front man for a top touring college show band. He was soon recognized for his remarkable talent to imitate famous voices including men and women.

After graduating Auburn University with a degree in mechanical engineering, Jones decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of becoming a singer/songwriter. He continued to perform and study music and was awarded a voice and performance scholarship from the Southern California Conservatory of Music and Loyola Marymount University.

He finally got his big break when he responded to a want ad for “sound-a-likes” in a Hollywood acting trade magazine. Within weeks his impressions were being distributed to more than 1,000 local radio and nationally syndicated radio stations. Jones continued to develop his own comedy and song parodies and decided to take his experience and talent to the Las Vegas Strip where he has been performing for more than six years.

Although his name may not be as recognizable as some of the other impressionists headlining on the Las Vegas Strip, his talent packed revue offers the same level of entertainment in a more low key and intimate setting.
