Show Review

When crossing the line is funny

By Kelly Thompson and Judy Jenner

If some of your favorite comedies include the likes of "Dumb and Dumber," "Tommy Boy," "There's Something About Mary" and "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," then Amazing Johnathan's humor is right up your alley. Dubbed the "Freddy Krueger of Comedy," Amazing Johnathan gives new meaning to politically incorrect and gives the audience numerous ways to go home and torture their friends.

Before the show starts, a screen in the center of the stage shows clips from the above-mentioned movies, letting the audience know what they're in for.

Closer to the start of the show, the audience can be seen on the screen, and as the camera surfs through the crowd and zooms in on someone, the pranks start. While at first rather excited to see themselves on screen, people cheer. Then the phrases show up on the screen beneath their images, such as "hookers," "hung like a Tic Tac," "unemployed porn star," "my fake ID worked" and "thinks she is here to see Wayne Newton." There is nothing like laughing at other people's expense!

He calls up a volunteer from the audience to help him with a large portion of his show. The first thing he asks this person for is a $20 bill. He rips it in half and proceeds to try numerous "magic" ways to put the bill back together. At the end of the failed exploits he finally manages to tape the bill back together, complete with a handy-dandy carrying case.

Amazing Johnathan can leave no wound unsalted, and to help him with this is Psychic Tanya, who has to take a lot of abuse: she gets scissors stuck in her head, stuff dropped on her from above, she gets smacked, insulted and humiliated. One of the best one-liners Amazing Johnathan comes up with is when he points out that "the hamster is dead, but the wheel's still spinning." Tanya does an excellent job at portraying a very dumb blonde who, in spite of all her handicaps, has no problem standing up to Amazing Johnathan and providing very hilarious repartee.

If you are a person who is easily offended, you would be much better off going to see David Copperfield. In fact, Johnathan goads audience members into believing the magic man is there to see the show as well, and when the whole crowd turns to gawk, Amazing Johnathan shouts, "F---ers!" proceeding to flip the audience the bird with a veritable chorus line of middle fingers, "You came here to see me!"
